Annual Report to the Community

The Public Service Auxiliary was founded in the year 2000 and acts as a helping hand to the BHI Public Safety Department. We have 24 members and welcome all property owners to join our group. Our purpose is to assist the Department in times of emergency, such as major fires, hurricanes or other emergencies. We are a 501 (C)(3) organization. One of our duties is to provide food and drink to Public Safety staff and volunteers at the emergency site, and to shuttle needed supplies back and forth from the Operations Building.
We receive training twice a year to keep us up to date with fire emergency protocol, radio training and once a year for hurricane preparedness. Thankfully, we did not have a major fire event in 2014. Nor did we experience a hurricane or tropical storm event which required our assistance. We hope to continue that run of good fortune in 2015.
The PSA also acts as a conduit for donations received throughout the year from persons aided by and thankful for the exemplary service offered by our Public Safety Department.
We also raise funds to supplement the tax-based budgeted items for the Public Safety Department. The Director of Public Safety gives us a wish list of things not covered in the Village budget and we typically try to fill those needs not covered by the village tax base. Each year we sponsor a fund raiser in the spring. Last year we hosted a “Brats and Dogs” event which raised just over $500 and seemed to be hugely enjoyed by those in attendance. This year, on Thursday, March 26th we are planning to go back to a chili supper and games night fund raiser. It promises to be a fun night for the entire community including employers, employees, village residents and property owners.
Remember, all monies raised and donated go for the enhancement of our Public Safety Department.
We also organize social functions throughout the year, usually appreciation suppers in the winter and fall for Public Safety staff and members, volunteers and their families.
Every June the PSA, in partnership with the Public Safety Department, sponsors a Hurricane Preparedness program for the Community, which the Director of Public Safety conducts.
Again, we always welcome new members. If you are interested in joining, contact me or any of our officers or leaders. This year we are fortunate to have Nonie Williams as Vice president, Susan Mullen, Secretary, Lou Chamberlain, Treasurer and Barbara McQuaide as Team Captain. Our team leaders are Pat Lammert, Lee Wester, Brenda Quanstrom and Linda Elrod. These women have served more than a year in these positions and we appreciate their dedication and service to the Public Safety Auxiliary.
